The squirrels who squabbled- Colourful Semantics pack containing worded and wordless cards.

Colourful Semantics is a fun and creative way to help students structure their sentences in a way that makes sense and is interesting to read or hear. It helps them understand the different parts of a sentence and how they work together.

How to Use Colourful Semantics

  • Who? - Person or thing doing something.

  • What doing? - Action being done.

  • What? - Thing the action is done to.

  • Where? - Place where the action happens.

  • Describe? - The adjective in the sentence. ‘Describe’ can be moved to different places on the strip to add description to other words in the sentence.

  • To who? Shows the recipient of the action

  • When? When the action takes place

  • How? How the action happens

By using different colours for each part of the sentence, it helps students see how the sentence is structured and what each part is doing.  The sentences can be adapted to all learners in your classroom. Students can start with 2 colours and build on this the more confident they become with the sentence structure.

You can make Colourful Semantics even more enjoyable for students by using coloured pens or pencils to write their sentences. You could also create sentence strips with each part of the sentence written in a different colour and mix them up for your students to put them in the right order.
